4 DAY DESERT HORSEBACK SAFARI

PRICE – N$14 990/person
Single supplement N$600/person

Imagine sleeping out in the Namib Desert, under huge star-filled skies, listening to the sounds of the bush... now add that with some horse riding and you have one of the best options of exploring the desert.

The below itinerary only allows for the trip and we recommend a little extra time to allow for accommodation at the end of the trip though it can be done in a short period of time if need be. Drive from Windhoek/Swakopmund is approximately 5 hours.

DAY 1

Arrive at the lodge in the desert in the afternoon / lunch time (depending on the time you set out). You'll have the opportunity to catch your breath or perhaps relax by the pool and later this afternoon meet your horse for the first time. Care is taken to ensure you are matched to a horse that will ensure you have a great ride whether you are a beginner or advanced rider. From here we will ride out into the desert for our first night under the stars. Depending on how many nights we are spending in the desert will depend on where our camp is based but you can be assured it will be a beautiful spot. The camp will be set up prior to your arrival and a drink will soon be handed to you. The grooms then take and care for your horse while you relax. A bush toilet and shower will have been erected so you can freshen up and later a tasty dinner is heated over the fire and served under a canopy of stars.

DAY 2 & 3

The day starts as and when you wake up. Enjoy freshly brewed coffee and breakfast cooked on the fire, after which set off on the first stage of the riding for the day. Late morning we'll stop for tea and the horses are fed and watered. Hammocks are strung between trees, or perhaps a camp bed is ready for you and you can relax until mid afternoon. A picnic lunch is enjoyed with chilled white wine. We set off for our afternoon riding, eventually ending up at their new camp for the evening. Dinner once again under the stars.(Please note that if you are on one night ride you will return to the lodge). The ride today will often take you through a variation of terrain, from grassy plains with the backdrop of mountains, through dry river beds and through rocky gorges and hills. There's plenty of opportunity to canter or gallop as well as simply relax and enjoy what the beauty of nature has given to this truly remarkable area.

DAY 3 & 4

The next morning after the usual scrumptious breakfast we'll make our way back to the stables arriving back at the lodge around mid morning and you can continue your journey or perhaps spend a night in the lodge. If you stay, this afternoon we are accompanied by a guide and taken on a nature drive on the property, which includes a short walk at the end of the drive up to the highest viewpoint in the area, for a 360 degree view of the area. A good night's rest in their chalet follows a three-course dinner at the lodge with some fine wines and you continue your journey.

Please note that horse riders must have some riding experience, whilst it is not necessary to be a highly experienced rider you need to be able to control the horse and feel confident and comfortable in the saddle.

Horses: are a mix of warmbloods, arabs, Namib desert horses and even some farm horses. There's a variety to suit all levels of riders from confidence giving beginner rides to horses that will keep a more experienced horse rider happy.
Riding equipment: western style saddles are the norm and very comfortable - having spent 7.5 hours in the saddle one day I can vouch for that!
Clothing: bring comfortable long trousers (or jodphurs) as well as a shoe/boot with a small heel. If you have a riding hat then we recommend bringing that along too.
Guides: are knowledgeable, confident and capable riders

THIS RIDING EXPERIENCE CAN ALSO BE COMBINED WITH THE SEARCHING FOR DESERT ELEPHANT RIDE, SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY.

Transfers can be arranged from the city if you do not have your own vehicle or if you are not incorporating this as part of another trip.

4 DAY ELEPHANT SEARCH ON HORSEBACK

PRICE – N$14 990/person
Single supplement N$600/person

Located in Damaraland this is a shorter riding trip searching for Desert Elephant. It can added to another itinerary, for clients on a self-drive trip through Namibia, or for those with a short time available transfers to/from Windhoek can be arranged. The following is a guideline and the ride can be 1-3 nights.

DAY 1 - Horse ride sleep out, Damaraland

Guests will need to arrive just after breakfast, (or alternatively we can arrange accommodation for the night before) then you'll meet your new horse, saddle up and ride out in search of the desert-adapted elephant. We'll stop and enjoy a packed lunch in the shade of a big tree in some forgotten waterway in the wilderness. We'll reach camp by sunset in time for cold drinks, hot showers and fireside tales of bravado in the face of massive pachyderms (that's elephants) viewed at point blank range from the saddle of a plunging steed. OK, so they were carthorses bought by the lodge from the locals in the area and they don't plunge but we were just starting to get on a roll and enjoy ourselves. We will visit villages along the way, meeting locals and seeing how they live today – they also will give us up-to-date information on where the elephants may be located. Dinner under the stars and sleep under canvas in tents and all equipment provided.

DAY 2 & 3 - Horse ride sleep out, Damaraland

Resume the safari life style, breakfast around the fire, morning ride tracking elephants. Lunch back at camp, some down time to relax or read a book, tea and coffee afternoon ride, sundowners, campfire chronicles. In Damaraland we only shift camp every second day as we have endless options for riding in all directions, through varied terrain and spend on average 7 hours a day in the saddle. We'll still enjoy different locations for lunch and on occasion have come across rhino spoor in one of the regions so you never know – we could be lucky and not only see elephants but black rhino as well. Naturally, the wine and stories will continue to flow.

DAY 4 - Grootberg Lodge

Ride back to the Grootberg Lodge, arriving late afternoon. Time for a long deserved hot shower and a final posh dinner at the lodge and sleep the sleep of the worn out in luxury.

Please note the trip includes a back up team, luxury camping with not too much hardship involved, long drop loo, hot shower, stretchers, linen, dome tents and cold gin and tonics and the price includes drinks, meals, activities and accommodation, exclusive of phone calls and curios

The terrain is varied with dry riverbeds, open plains with big lead woods, mopane bush and even some makalani groves. Minimum number of two riders and a maximum of six with a weight limit of 90kg.

The style is limited participation, assisted camping and there is one accommodated night included in the itinerary, (day 6). Collection time is between 08:30 & 09:00 from anywhere within the Windhoek city limits.

Day 1 OKONJIMA

You will be collected between 08:30 & 09:00.

We will travel north, stopping at small towns along the way including Okahandja, where we have time to visit Namibia's largest wood carving market. The market is operated on a local co-operative basis and is one of the best places to shop for truly Namibian souvenirs. Continuing north, passing through farmland, we aim to arrive at Okonjima during the middle afternoon, giving us time to set up our camp and to relax in the shade for a while before heading out on to the property to take part in the afternoon's activities.

Okonjima is the home of the Africat Foundation, a specialist conservation concern that centres its operations around the African Big Cats, particularly cheetah. This afternoon you will be taken on a tour during which you will be able to meet, close-up-and-personal, some of the cheetah that are going through the Africat rehabilitation programme.

Most of the animals currently living at Okonjima have been rescued from various desperate situations, being orphaned or caught in a trap, and the aim of rehabilitation process is to attempt to re-introduce them into the wild. After our educational tour we will return our camp and prepare for dinner under the African stars. (LD)

Day 2 NAMUTONI, ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK

An early start and continuing north we pass through some small towns, making short stops for fresh supplies and fuel. Continuing on to our East Etosha, Namutoni region camp we again aim to arrive in time for lunch, giving us time to relax before heading into the park during the cool of the late afternoon for our first game drive. (BLD)

Day 2 OKAUKUEJO, ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK

A full day's game driving. We again leave early to enjoy the cool morning air as we game drive our way through Etosha to Halali camp, situated in the middle of the park. Along the way we visit several waterholes and are afforded splendid views of the massive Etosha Pan. The game viewing is usually excellent and we have the chance to tick off a few new species that are not normally seen on the Namutoni side of the park.

We stop at Halali for a rest and a leisurely lunch. There is time to visit the Halali waterhole and to make use of the swimming pool and bar facilities before continuing on our way and game driving down to Okaukuejo.

Okaukuejo is famous for its waterhole, which has been described as one of the "best game viewing opportunities in Southern Africa". Situated on the doorstep of our camp, black rhino, elephant, lion and numerous species of antelope are usually seen. (BLD)

Day 4 OTJIKANDERO HIMBA VILLAGE, KAMANJAB

Leaving Etosha we begin our journey south with a relatively short drive to the small town of Kamanjab where we will make a short stop here before continuing on to find the Himba Tribesmen. This is the only traditionally functioning Himba community outside the far north Kaokoland region of Namibia These tribes-people have migrated here, lifestyle and customs intact, and are following their traditional way-of-life in their village on a farm.

OTJIKANDERO Village is located about 20 km outside Kamanjab, the exact location of the site varies as the Himba occasionally roam to a new location. During the afternoon we will be invited into Oase Village and will meet with the locals. We will have a specialist guide for the time we are there, who will be able to translate for us and will introduce us to this 'alternative lifestyle'. We will learn about marriage customs, traditional food and the mysteries of the local religion, 'Holy Fire'. (BLD)

Day 5 BRANDBERG MOUNTAIN

Today we head into one of the most beautiful desert regions in Namibia, Damaraland. We drive south to the capital of this region, the small town of Khorixas, and then take a detour to the west to visit the ancient Bushman rock engravings at Twyfelfontien. At this location we will have a local guide to conduct us on a short guided tour.

From here we head deeper into the desert to Namibia's highest mountain, The Brandberg, (2573 m). Brandberg Mountain is an ancient Bushman spiritual site and tonight we will sleep under the shadow of this giant granite monolith. (BLD)

Day 6 SWAKOPMUND, SKELETON COAST

Starting early to enjoy the cool of the morning we will hike, into the mountain with our guide to see the world famous 'White Lady' rock painting. Attributed to the Bushman artists, the white lady panel is believed by some to be in excess of 20 000 years old. Back on the road for more beautiful Damaraland scenery. We make our first stop in the small town of Uis, an old mining town, and one of the best places to buy semi-precious stones, for which Namibia is famous. Here, rough Amethyst, Tourmaline etc can be found at bargain prices.

From here we turn directly west and cross the 'gravel plains' on our way to the Atlantic Ocean and the Skeleton Coast. Meeting the ocean at Henties Bay, we first head north along the coast to visit the seal colony at Cape Cross. Here at certain times of the year there can be as many as 100,000 Cape Fur seals in attendance.

The next destination is Swakopmund, following the Skeleton Coast into Namibia's premier seaside town. We aim to arrive in the late afternoon giving us time to explore the town on foot before sunset. Tonight we take the chance to sample one of the excellent restaurants. The seafood in Swakopmund is superb. Your guide will offer to organise a group meal in a local restaurant for this evening. Participation is recommended but by no means required. Dinner this evening in not included in the price of the safari and will be for the client's own account. (BL)

Day 7 WINDHOEK

The drive back to Windhoek today will take about 4 and a half hours. We will only depart after lunch, giving us time to spend the morning relaxing in Swakopmund. Swakopmund is a very pleasant seaside town with lots of shops, a good stretch of beach (although the Atlantic here is quite cold) and an open-air curio market.

There is also a very good museum and the Namibian National Marine Aquarium is located in Swakopmund. Alternatively, there are various optional activities that can be arranged. These include aeroplane and microlight flights over the desert, scenic drives, fishing trips (both from the beach or in a boat), four-wheel motorcycle (quad bike) trips into the desert and over the sand dunes around Swakopmund, sand boarding trips (also in the dunes), skydiving, surfing, bird-watching and many other activities are available. Your tour guide will discuss all the possible options with you before you reach Swakopmund and will offer to make bookings in advance of your arrival. (N.B. All extra activities and excursions in Swakopmund are subject to availability and are made at the client's own risk and expense).

This is the last day of our trip and after lunch we will transfer back to the capital city where you will be dropped off at your accommodation. (BL)

7 Day Southern Swing Safari

Rate per person per Safari: N$ 7 990.00

This safari has a guaranteed departure every Friday of the year, with a minimum of 2 people. There is no single supplement, and the price is virtually fully inclusive of everything you will need whilst travelling with us. The style is limited participation, assisted camping. Collection time is between 07:30 and 08:00 from anywhere within the Windhoek city limits.

Day 1 QUIVER TREE FOREST

We start our long journey south on the main B1 highway, travelling through the thin strip of Kalahari Desert that protrudes onto the eastern side of Namibia. Stopping at small towns along the way including Rehoboth, traditional home of the Baster people, we aim to arrive at the Quiver Tree Forest in the middle afternoon. Located just north of the southern centre of Keetmanshoop, (officially the sunniest town in the world), we make camp and have time to explore the area on foot.

Quiver trees are not in fact trees, they are a type of aloe, (Aloe Dichotoma), so called because the branches fork 'dictomously'. These weird looking plants dot the landscape in this part of the world and are locally common; however they are one of the world's rarest flora species. (LD)

Day 2 FISH RIVER CANYON

We leave Keetmanshoop and head further south to Fish River Canyon. We are heading to the main view point where we can see how impressive this canyon actually is. This is an ideal opportunity for photos and to spend some time experiencing this amazing sight. After lunch we then make our way to our campsite for the night which is a few hours drive away but is still based on the top of the Fish River Canyon. (BLD)

Day 3 KLEIN AUS VISTA, SOUTHERN NAMIB

It's an early start to make the most of the morning and our visit in to the Canyon. Viewing from the top we can see the river sparkling in the sunlight far below us, and can barely imagine how many millennia it took for the forces of erosion to carve such a magnificent vista. It's possible to make our way into the canyon and to the bottom of this the second largest Canyon in Africa. We have lunch and a dip in the cool waters before making our way out and back to camp.

Time to pack up camp and move on to our next destination, the tiny town of Aus. We sleep tonight at Klein Aus Vista, a private reserve, beautifully located in theAus Mountain Range, (Huib-Hoch-Plateau region). (BLD)

Day 4 KLEIN AUS VISTA, SOUTHERN NAMIB

We are up with the dawn this morning for the short drive to Luderitz, we travel on the main road and keep a sharp look out for the unique Namib wild horses. These horses are the only feral horses in Namibia and have, very unusually, become adapted to an existence with very limited water. Where they originated from is un-clear, some people think they are the descendants of the horses used by the German cavalry during the First World War. Another theory is that they originally came from a horse farm that used to be run by a German Barron, (von Wolff), in the very early colonial days.

We arrive in Luderitz in time to join an optional extra excursion, a trip on an old wooden sailing ship, "The Sedina". We take a cruise around Luderitz bay and, weather permitting, to Halifax Island to see the Jackass Penguins. If the weather conditions are suitable we turn off the engines and come back to Luderitz under sail.Straight after the Sedina trip we drive out to Kolmanskop, a desert ghost town about 20 km out of Luderitz. It was built in the 1920's during the diamond rush and was abandoned when bigger and better diamonds were

found further along the coast. The area is still abandoned and the desert has encroached over the entire town, giving an eerie feeling and real meaning to the word "ghost".

Lunch today is not included in the programme, this is to allow everybody as much flexibility with their time as possible and to give us the opportunity to sample some of the excellent local cafes. During the middle of the day there is time to explore Luderitz Town with its traditional German architecture and later we will take a drive out to Diaz Point to see the bird life, hopefully a few seals and the stone cross replica, originally erected by the Portuguese mariner Bartholomew Diaz. Returning to Klein Aus Vista in the late afternoon, the road takes us through the "forbidden Zone" so named because in years gone by, the alluvial diamonds found in Namibia were simply scattered across the desert and we again have time to enjoy sunset over the mountains. (BD)

N.B: The "Sedina" excursion is subject to availability and, if undertaken, will be for the clients own risk and expense.

Day 5 NAMIB DESERT CAMP

Turning north, we once again head deep into the ancient southern Namib, travelling on small gravel roads and passing some tiny rural communities along the way. The scenery is harsh, and sometimes forbidding. The process of erosion in these areas is well advanced and we pass time rounded "koppies" arid terrain and outcrops of tortured rock. Our lunch stop will be near to Maltahohe at a Namib cultural centure, so we can stop and learn a little of the culture and lives of the people of this region. Traversing this bleak yet beautiful landscape, the terrain begins to change and we cross some open grass savannah and farmlands before the terrain begins to give way to the immense red sand dune desert of the Namib. We aim to arrive at our camp during the late afternoon and watch the colours glow and change on distant mountains to the east. (BLD)

Day 6 NAMIB DESERT CAMP

A pre dawn start is essential this morning as we want to catch the soft light of the sunrise on the desert. After passing through Sesriem, the gateway to the dunes and driving into the heart of the dune field, we reach Sossusvlei itself by walking the last 5 km through the dunes. The walk is like nothing else, in the cool of the morning, with soft sunlight just beginning to play over the dunes creating a sharp light and shadow contrast across the whole desert. Ancient mineral pans, stunted camel thorn trees and the chance of seeing a gemsbok or maybe an ostrich make the photo opportunities perfect.

We spend the morning in and around Sossusvlei, also visiting dune 45, and as the day wears on we return to Sesriem for lunch to escape the heat of the afternoon. As the day cools off in the late afternoon we will take a short excursion to the Sesriem Canyon. (BLD)

Day 7 WINDHOEK

After breakfast we begin our journey, over the mountains and along scenic roads, back to Windhoek. We will travel over the Naukluft Mountains and also the Khomas Hochland Range, through beautiful mountain passes on our way back to civilization.

We are due back into the city around 16:00 and you will be dropped off at your accommodation on our return. (BL)

There is no single supplement, and the price is virtually fully inclusive of everything you will need whilst travelling with us. The style is limited participation, assisted camping and there are two accommodated nights included on the itinerary. Collection time is between 08:00 & 08:30 from anywhere within the Windhoek city limits.

Day 1 NAMIB DESERT CAMP

You will be collected between 08:00 & 08:30 am and taken to the office to meet with the rest of the group. Once everyone is together, we can leave Windhoek and head out towards the desert. Our drive today will take us through the Khomas Hochland range of mountains and then further south west towards the Naukluft Mountains.

Lunch will be on route and then we reach open plains and from here it is only a short distance to our next stop, the tiny town of Solitaire. We will stop here for some fuel and refreshments before continuing on a short distance to our camp for the night.

We aim to arrive at our camp during the late afternoon and so there should be time for a dip in the pool and to see the sun set over the Naukluft Mountains. (Please note that we do not camp inside the Park area but about 48 kms away.) Dinner is cooked over an open fire.

Day 2 NAMIB DESERT CAMP

A pre dawn start is essential this morning as we want to catch the soft light of the sunrise on the desert. After passing through Sesriem at sunrise, we drive into the dry river bed and will soon start to see the dunes on either side of us. We stop for photos along the way as this is where you see the strong contrast of colors as the sun hits the sides of the dunes.

We stop for breakfast and prepare for our walk.

(BLD)

Day 3 SWAKOPMUND, SKELETON COAST

An early start today, we are heading north-west to the seaside town of Swakopmund located on the Skeleton Coast. Leaving the dune fields far behind us we are soon back into the mountain desert. We cross the Tropic of Capricorn and traverse both the Gaub and the Kuiseb pass, driving down to the dry river bed at the bottom of the canyon before climbing up the other side, watching the spectacular desert landscape unfold before us.

From the mountains we cross the desolate "Namib gravel plains" before reaching the coastal sand dunes at the port town of Walvis Bay. We will stop for a picnic lunch beside the ocean and there will be time to see the flamingos and other bird life in the Walvis Bay lagoon before continuing the now short drive into Swakopmund.

The Swakopmund section of the trip is designed to allow people to relax either with the group, or on their own. Only breakfast is provided, this is to allow you to plan your time here with as much flexibility as possible and not to be tied to group meal times. It also gives you the chance to sample some of the excellent local cafes and restaurants. The seafood in Swakopmund is superb. Your guide will offer to organise a group meal in a local restaurant for this evening. Participation is recommended but by no means required.

Dinner this evening in not included in the price of the safari and will be for the client's own account. (BL)

Day 4 SWAKOPMUND

Today is a free day. The idea is to allow time for everybody to do their own thing.

Dinner this evening is not included in the price of the safari and will be for the client's own account. (BL)

Day 5 BRANDBERG MOUNTAIN

Leaving early and heading north along the coast, we will first visit the seal colony at Cape Cross where it is possible to see thousands of Cape Fur Seals in the water and on the surrounding rocks and beaches.

From here we will turn east, inland and back into the desert, travelling on to the small town of Uis, an old mining town, located more or less in the middle of no-where. Uis is one of the best places to buy semi-precious stones for which Namibia is famous. Here, rough Amethyst, Tourmaline etc can be found at bargain prices.

From Uis it is now only a short drive to Namibia's highest mountain, The Brandberg, (2573 m). Brandberg Mountain is an ancient Bushman spiritual site and tonight we will sleep under the shadow of this giant granite monolith. (BL)

We will make our camp about 150 meters from the village "Kraal" to ensure both our and our hosts privacy. (BLD)

Day 7 OKAUKUEJO, ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK

In the morning we will be invited into Oase Village and will meet with the locals. We will have a specialist guide for the time we are there, who will be able to translate for us and will introduce us to this "alternative lifestyle". We will learn about marriage customs, traditional food and the mysteries of the local religion, "Holy Fire".

Departing Kamanjab we head East to Outjo for a short stop for fresh supplies and where we can also get coffee and sticky cakes at the local bakery, before continuing on to Etosha's premier resort, Okaukuejo.

Etosha forms the main game viewing section of our safari and the Okaukuejo area offers us some of the best waterholes in the park and the best chance to see some Big Game.

Game driving is not the only way to see the African wildlife at Okaukuejo. Located right on the boundary of the camp and within easy walking distance there is a floodlit waterhole for "after hours" game watching. Okaukuejo is famous for its waterhole, it has been described as one of the "best game viewing opportunities in Southern Africa" and black rhino, elephant, lion and numerous species of antelope are often seen. We stop at Halali for a rest and a leisurely lunch. There is time to visit the Halali waterhole and to make use of the swimming pool and bar facilities before continuing on our way and game driving over to Namutoni.

We must be back by our camp before sunset. Once again, there is a floodlit waterhole to visit during the evening so the game viewing continues. (BLD)

Day 9 OKONJIMA

Time for one more morning game drive before we leave Etosha. but its not the end of our game viewing. We will aim to arrive at Okonjima during the middle of the afternoon, giving us time to set up our camp and to relax in the shade or plunge into the pool.

Okonjima is the home of the Africat Foundation, a specialist conservation concern that centres it's operations around the African Big Cats, particularly cheetah.
